Milk Toast Prayers

One of the fun things about parenting a two-year-old is listening to her prayers. We prayed with her at meals and bedtime long before she began acquiring verbal skills. At some point in our regular ritual, Linnea decided she wanted to say the prayers, so Susanne would talk through the prayers with her, saying a few words at a time, with Linnea repeating the words she could say (for the first 3-4 months she did not want Daddy to lead this unless Mommy was gone). Her prayers are usually quick and to the point… “Jesus . . . food . . . Amen,” but she covers the essentials. Spiritual milk we pray will someday lead to solid food.
I thought of this as I pondered Jesus’ lengthy prayer during the few remaining moments He had with his disciples before He went to the cross. Read the rest of this entry »
