These verses put me in mind of the “sheep” verses—the ones that tell us that Jesus’ sheep know His voice.  It pulls me to a lonely meadow where a shepherd watches over his sheep.  One sheep begins to wander and the shepherd calls out, reminding the sheep.  The sheep hears his voice, knows it and returns back to the flock in safety.

Several quick studies of this word “hear” show it as a “sensational perception.”  It makes sense to think of it that way.  Hearing is so tenuous and precious, so easily damaged and lost.  When we lose hearing, we lose so much.
